When Intelligence Becomes Abundant

When intelligence becomes abundant, what becomes scarce?
Us.
That's the idea this piece is about. It's one of the earliest insights behind ComOS, and I think it changes how we should feel about everything happening in AI right now. Thirty years of working for the internet
For thirty years, we've worked for the internet. Every website, app and checkout was built for a person at a screen. We fill in the forms, juggle the passwords, open the tabs, compare the prices and chase the confirmations. The internet gave us the world, and handed us all the busywork that came with it.
That's about to flip. Agents are arriving that can find, compare, book, order, schedule and fix things for us. They get better every month, and there are more of them every month. Soon you'll say what you want, and an agent will take care of the rest.
The web gave everyone a voice. Agents give everyone help. Intelligence and knowledge, purpose and noise
The usual story about AI is a story of loss: machines get smart, people get replaced. I think it has the economics backwards.
AI brings intelligence and knowledge. Humans bring purpose and noise.
Purpose is the why. An agent can do almost anything, but it doesn't want anything. It has no reason to begin, no goal of its own, no stake in how things turn out. Every task an agent does starts with a person who wanted something.
Noise is the spark that starts every change: the itch, the hunch, the "this could be better," the idea nobody asked for. It's unpredictable and often unreasonable, and it's where everything new comes from. Agents are very good at finishing things. People are the ones who begin them.
When something becomes abundant, its value falls, and the value of whatever stays scarce goes up. As intelligence becomes cheap, purpose becomes the valuable thing. Every agent needs someone's why. And one person with a clear purpose can now direct what used to take a whole company.
That doesn't mean fewer people doing meaningful work. It means far more people starting things, because the cost of turning an idea into something real is collapsing. A web built for eyes
There's a catch. Agents need somewhere to do that work, and the web we built for ourselves is a poor fit.
To an agent, a web page is a jumble where the price, the ad and the cookie notice all look alike. It has to guess what's a fact and what's a pitch. It can't tell whether the page is from today or last spring. And to do anything, it has to drive a form built for human fingers.
Agents can push through all of that, and they're getting better at it. But they take the path of least resistance, the way water finds the easiest way down. Give an agent a direct way to ask a question and get a clean answer, and it will never scrape a page again. Picture a stream
Now imagine every one of those agents, from every assistant, flowing toward a single entrance, like a river into a harbour.
That entrance is the ComOS federation. An agent connects once. It doesn't need to know which business it wants or where that business lives. The federation meets it at the door and shows it the way: who can do this, how they compare on the facts, and how to step inside.
The agent follows that guided path straight to its destination. And waiting there is everything it needs to carry out a person's purpose: Data. Live facts from the source: prices, availability, coverage, terms. Never last week's copy, and never a guess. Change. The power to act: book, order, update, pay, within limits a person set. Instructions. How this business works and what to do next, written for agents to read.
Any number of agents, one entrance. Each is guided to where it needs to be, and finds data, change and instructions waiting. Talk, and it becomes real
Here's what makes this exciting: you can create and run a business of any size just by talking.
Share your purpose and your noise. Say what you want to build, who it's for and how it should work. ComOS makes it real. Agents set it up, run it day to day, and carry out every change you start. You set the why and the limits. They do the rest.
So agents sit on both sides of the stream. A customer's agent arrives looking for something, and your business's agent is already there to serve it. They meet in a shared place with shared rules, and the deal is done in seconds.
The website stops being the thing you build. Your business is the source of truth: its offers, its calendar, its prices, its rules. Agents read it as tools and facts. People get a page drawn on demand, showing exactly what they came for. A business doesn't need a website to be found, and a new one doesn't need a web team to begin. Built to be trusted
A place where agents act for people has to earn trust in ways you can check, not just claim. Facts apart from ads. Each business publishes facts an agent can filter on. Paid promotion is labeled and kept separate, and it can never change the ranking or the facts. A record of real deals. A business's standing comes from deals that actually settled, recorded on a public log anyone can verify. Live, not last week. Answers come from the business at the moment of asking, with a cheap way to check whether anything has changed. People in charge. Owners decide how far their agents may act alone, and spending stops at limits a person set. What the after looks like Your time comes back. The hours lost to forms, tabs and hold music go to the things you care about. Anyone can build. A shop, a service, a company of any size: describe it, and it runs. No code, no website, no team needed to begin. The economy runs at agent speed. A shop's agent reorders from a supplier's agent the moment stock runs low. Work that took a week of emails settles in a minute. Honest answers win. Rank comes from facts, not ad spend. More people get in. If you can say what you want, you can take part. No app to learn, no interface designed for someone else.
Every big shift looks obvious in hindsight. The internet went from something we visit to something we live in. Next, it becomes something that works for us. The entrance is open
Today, any agent can connect to the ComOS federation, find a business, step inside it, read live facts, act within limits a person set, and settle a payment.
Every business that joins makes the federation more useful to every agent, and every new agent makes joining more valuable to every business.
They bring the intelligence. We bring the purpose and the noise.
What would you start if intelligence were free?
